
Few cannabis breeders have influenced the genetic landscape of modern marijuana as deeply as Shantibaba, the professional name of Australian breeder Scott Blakey. Over a career spanning more than four decades, Blakey has worked with landrace cannabis populations, helped develop some of the defining cultivars of the 1990s Dutch seed scene, co-founded major seed companies, preserved important breeding stock, and later turned much of his attention toward cannabinoid-specific varieties intended for medical use. His name is closely associated with cultivars including Black Widow, Super Silver Haze, Critical Mass, Medicine Man, Mango Haze, Shark Shock, and El Niño, along with a later generation of CBD-rich genetics. Rather than becoming famous primarily as a cannabis personality, Shantibaba built his reputation through breeding plants—selecting parents, maintaining old genetic lines, testing progeny, and repeatedly returning to large plant populations in search of particular combinations of traits.
His career also overlaps with several of the most important figures of the early European cannabis seed industry. He worked extensively with legendary Australian-Dutch breeder Nevil Schoenmakers, became a business partner of Arjan Roskam during the formative years of Green House Seed Company, and later established Mr. Nice Seedbank with Howard Marks, the Welsh cannabis smuggler turned author and legalization advocate. The result is a biography intertwined with the history of Amsterdam cannabis itself. Many famous strain origin stories remain disputed because breeding took place during an underground era when documentation was inconsistent and intellectual-property systems for cannabis genetics barely existed. Yet Shantibaba’s contribution to the development and preservation of major cannabis families is difficult to separate from the rise of the international seed market.
Early Life and the Beginning of a Breeder
Scott Blakey was born in Melbourne, Australia, in 1964. Cannabis entered his life while he was still young, during an era when Australian growers were developing a distinctive underground cultivation culture of their own. Blakey has recalled beginning to grow as a teenager and quickly becoming fascinated by a simple observation: cannabis grown carefully could be dramatically better than much of what was being sold. The experience encouraged him to look at the plant not simply as something to consume but as something that could be studied, selected, and improved. He later studied science at the University of Melbourne, an educational background that fit naturally with the increasingly methodical approach he was developing toward plants and breeding.
Australia also exposed the future breeder to unusual local cannabis populations. Among the genetics he has discussed from this period is Mullumbimby Madness, an Australian variety that became legendary for its powerful, long-flowering sativa characteristics. What separated Blakey from many growers of the period, however, was his desire to understand where cannabis genetics came from. Instead of limiting himself to whatever seeds happened to circulate locally, he began traveling. Those journeys would become central to his development because they allowed him to encounter cannabis closer to the traditional agricultural cultures that had maintained it for generations. Long before “landrace genetics” became a marketing phrase used by seed companies, Blakey was looking for plants in the regions where distinct cannabis populations had evolved.
Traveling the World in Search of Cannabis Genetics
During the 1980s, Blakey traveled extensively through Asia, describing journeys that covered tens of thousands of miles and included time in countries and regions associated with traditional cannabis and hashish production. His travels took him through parts of India and Southeast Asia, while accounts of his wider collecting work also include Afghanistan, Pakistan, Burma and Bhutan. Instead of encountering cannabis primarily as a commercially packaged commodity, he saw it growing within local agricultural and cultural systems. Seeds collected during these travels became part of the private genetic library he would eventually use in European breeding projects. In 1986 he also spent months traveling through South America, including Peru, Colombia, Ecuador, Bolivia, and Chile, collecting seeds and other plant material.
India contributed something more personal than genetics. While spending time there, Blakey became known as Shantibaba, a name he has explained as meaning roughly a peaceful person or peaceful man. In one account, he connected the name to time spent among sadhus; in another interview, he recalled using it for a gem-cutting business in Jaipur before it became his nickname. Either way, it followed him into the cannabis world and ultimately became far better known than his legal name. Decades later, the name seems particularly appropriate to the breeder’s public persona. While commercial disputes have surrounded some chapters of his career, Shantibaba has generally portrayed breeding as a patient, almost meditative occupation centered on observation, living plants and the preservation of biological diversity.
Amsterdam, Green House Seeds and the Cannabis Cup Era
Shantibaba eventually relocated to the Netherlands and became involved in Amsterdam’s rapidly expanding cannabis scene. By the mid-1990s, he was a partner in the Green House Seed Company, working closely with Arjan Roskam while simultaneously collaborating with Nevil Schoenmakers. Schoenmakers had already become one of the foundational figures of the commercial cannabis seed business through The Seed Bank, and his collection contained breeding material behind Northern Lights, Haze hybrids and numerous other influential lines. The combination of Schoenmakers’ genetic library and Shantibaba’s selection work created one of the most productive breeding partnerships of the period.
This era produced plants whose descendants remain widespread today. Super Silver Haze, developed through work involving Shantibaba and Schoenmakers, brought together the famous Skunk, Northern Lights and Haze families. It became one of the defining competition cultivars of the decade, earning first-place recognition at the High Times Cannabis Cup across 1997, 1998 and 1999 in various categories and overall competition. The repeated victories helped establish the strain as a benchmark for practical Haze hybrids: plants that retained much of Haze’s soaring character while becoming more manageable for growers than extremely long-flowering tropical sativas. The same breeding period produced or refined several other celebrated plants and created genetic combinations that would be reused by breeders around the world.
Perhaps no cultivar associated with Shantibaba is more famous—or historically contentious—than White Widow. One widely circulated account credits him with developing the cultivar from Brazilian and South Indian material during his Green House years, with White Widow famously winning the 1995 Cannabis Cup. Another version of the story credits Dutch breeder Ingemar with earlier work that ultimately produced the plant. Because these claims originated in an underground breeding scene with limited contemporary documentation, the precise authorship remains disputed. After leaving Green House, Shantibaba continued offering what he described as his original Widow breeding stock under the name Black Widow, making the cultivar one of the clearest examples of how complicated cannabis genetic history can become when plants, brand names and breeding material separate from one another.
Mr. Nice Seedbank and the Preservation of Classic Genetics
By 1998 Shantibaba’s relationship with Green House Seed Company had ended. Rather than abandoning the breeding material he had spent years developing, he entered another chapter of his career. Together with Howard Marks, and with Nevil Schoenmakers involved in breeding projects, Shantibaba established Mr. Nice Seedbank. Marks supplied the company’s memorable identity. A former international cannabis smuggler whose autobiography Mr. Nice had made him a countercultural celebrity, Marks had met Shantibaba during the Cannabis Cup era and developed a friendship with him. Shantibaba later recalled that creating the new seed catalog was less a problem of finding genetics than deciding which plants from their extensive collection should actually be released.
Several familiar Green House-era cultivars subsequently appeared through Mr. Nice under different names. Shantibaba’s version of White Widow became Black Widow, White Rhino was represented as Medicine Man, and Great White Shark became Shark Shock. The Mr. Nice catalog also preserved or developed varieties such as Critical Mass, Mango Haze, Neville’s Haze, Afghan Haze, Spice, Devil and Shit. Critical Mass in particular became an important commercial and medicinal cultivar because of its unusually heavy production, while Mango Haze represented another interpretation of the Haze breeding work that produced Super Silver Haze. Shantibaba has said that Mango Haze was closer to his own personal preference even though Super Silver Haze became the more famous plant. This distinction illustrates an important part of his philosophy: competition winners are not necessarily the only—or even the best—plants worth preserving.
From High-THC Cannabis to CBD Breeding
One of Shantibaba’s most important contributions came after the Cannabis Cup era. While much of the marijuana industry spent the 1990s and early 2000s selecting plants for increasingly powerful psychoactive effects and higher THC concentrations, he became increasingly interested in cannabidiol, or CBD. The shift reflected a larger question about what breeders might have unintentionally eliminated while selecting heavily for THC. Cannabis historically contained much broader variation in cannabinoid ratios than the high-THC recreational gene pool suggested. Restoring and stabilizing CBD-rich traits therefore offered a different breeding challenge—one that required chemical testing rather than simply judging plants by aroma, growth structure or subjective effects.
That work eventually led Shantibaba to collaborate with Jaime of Resin Seeds, whose Cannatonic genetics had produced plants with meaningful CBD levels. Their project became CBD Crew, a seed-breeding program explicitly focused on developing cannabinoid ratios useful to people seeking less-intoxicating cannabis. The breeders described working with analytical laboratories to test plants throughout the selection process, introducing a level of chemotype-based breeding that was still relatively unusual in the commercial seed world. Instead of selecting only for visible characteristics, breeders could examine actual cannabinoid results and decide which plants should become parents. CBD Crew subsequently introduced varieties such as CBD Critical Mass, CBD Shark Shock, CBD Skunk Haze and CBD Therapy.
CBD Therapy became particularly noteworthy because the project attempted to produce cannabis with extremely low THC relative to CBD. The company has described plants reaching CBD-to-THC ratios around 20:1, although it also openly acknowledges phenotype-to-phenotype variation and recommends laboratory testing when cannabinoid composition is medically important. That transparency reflects the difficulty of stabilizing cannabinoid ratios through seed populations. Rather than claiming every seed would behave identically, the breeding program has continued working toward greater consistency. In hindsight, Shantibaba’s movement toward CBD anticipated a major transformation of the cannabis market, where cannabinoid composition would eventually become as important to many consumers and researchers as THC potency itself.
Shantibaba’s Breeding Philosophy
The foundation of Shantibaba’s breeding philosophy is surprisingly traditional. Although laboratories now allow breeders to measure cannabinoids and other compounds precisely, his work has continued to emphasize large populations, careful selection, parent plants and repeated testing of offspring. Cannabis breeding, in this approach, is not simply the act of crossing two popular strain names. A cross creates genetic possibilities; selection determines whether any of those possibilities are actually worth keeping. Finding a remarkable individual may require growing hundreds or thousands of plants, evaluating their characteristics and then testing whether those traits reliably pass into future generations.
This helps explain Shantibaba’s continuing attachment to old mother and father plants and classic seed lines. Modern cannabis breeding can move quickly because consumer demand constantly generates new marijuana strain names, flavors and fashionable genetic combinations. Shantibaba has generally taken the opposite view: old genetics remain useful precisely because they contain characteristics that may disappear if breeders continuously narrow the population around whatever is currently popular. His own story—from collecting traditional seeds during his travels to maintaining parents connected with the formative Dutch breeding era—makes genetic preservation inseparable from breeding. A cultivar is not simply a product for one season; it can be a reservoir of traits that becomes valuable decades later.
Legacy and Continuing Influence
Shantibaba belongs to the small generation of breeders who helped connect the underground cannabis genetics of the 1970s and 1980s with the international seed industry that emerged during the 1990s. The plants connected to his work now appear throughout countless modern pedigrees. Widow hybrids, Critical Mass descendants, Haze crosses and combinations built around Northern Lights and Skunk have moved far beyond the companies that first sold them. Even growers who have never purchased a Mr. Nice seed may have cultivated something carrying genetics influenced by the breeding networks in which Shantibaba participated.
His later focus on medical cannabis and CBD gives that legacy another dimension. In a 2025 interview, Blakey described himself as once again concentrating heavily on genetics and quality control while working in Switzerland, referring to the present period of the cannabis industry as a kind of “second wave.” His current Shantibaba Seeds operation continues to offer both classic lines and newer hybrids, while his decades-old fascination with planting seeds and studying what emerges appears largely unchanged.
For cannabis history, that continuity may ultimately be his most important contribution. Shantibaba’s career stretches from motorcycles and seed collecting through Asia, to Amsterdam coffeeshops and Cannabis Cups, to preserved breeding mothers, laboratory cannabinoid testing and modern medical cannabis. Technologies, laws and markets have changed dramatically around him, but the basic problem that captivated the young Australian grower remains the same: plant a genetically diverse population, observe carefully, recognize something exceptional, and preserve it well enough that another generation can experience it. That combination of exploration, selection and preservation has made Shantibaba not merely the breeder associated with several famous strain names, but one of the figures who helped shape the genetic vocabulary of modern cannabis.
