Brothers Grimm Seeds is one of the most influential American cannabis breeding companies to emerge from the internet-forum era of the 1990s. Founded by Rick Campanella, better known as MrSoul, and his original partner Sly, the company became associated with compact, fast-flowering plants that retained the aromatic intensity and cerebral character normally linked to longer-blooming sativas. Cinderella 99, Apollo Eleven, Rosetta Stone, Princess Haze, and G13 Genius gave the catalog a coherent identity built around resin, tropical fruit, incense, efficient indoor growth, and energetic effects.
The company’s history is divided into two distinct periods. The original seed bank operated from 1996 until security concerns forced it to close in 2002. After more than a decade away, MrSoul revived Brothers Grimm Seeds in Colorado in 2015, initially with breeder Duke Diamond. The modern company now preserves several foundational lines while expanding into feminized seeds, commercial-scale production, testing programs, collaborations, and newer hybrids. That continuity makes Brothers Grimm both a legacy breeder and an active American seed business.
MrSoul Before Brothers Grimm Seeds
Rick Campanella began cultivating and breeding cannabis in 1986 while working professionally as a nuclear engineer. His technical background influenced the way he approached indoor gardening, environmental control, recordkeeping, and repeatable selection. Rather than treating breeding as a matter of combining fashionable names, he focused on observing how individual plants performed under stress, whether desirable traits returned in offspring, and whether a seed population could offer growers a dependable family resemblance.
During the late 1980s and early 1990s, access to international genetics was still limited for American growers. Seeds moved through mail-order catalogs, travelers, private exchanges, and emerging online communities. MrSoul’s participation in those networks exposed him to Dutch varieties and other growers making their own selections. By the middle of the 1990s, he and Sly had developed material they believed compared favorably with many commercial offerings, creating the foundation for a dedicated seed company.
Founding the Original Seed Bank
Brothers Grimm Seeds officially began distributing through the Canadian reseller Heaven’s Stairway in 1996. That platform was essential because prohibition made direct American seed sales exceptionally risky. Heaven’s Stairway connected independent breeders with an international customer base and allowed growers to obtain genetics that were otherwise confined to private circles. The company quickly became known for short flowering periods, substantial resin production, exotic aromas, and sativa-influenced effects in plants adapted to indoor cultivation.
The name Brothers Grimm referred to MrSoul and Sly rather than a large breeding collective. Their catalog drew heavily from a small group of exceptional female plants, especially Princess and Genius, and from selected males used to reproduce or redirect those traits. This created a connected body of work instead of a collection of unrelated hybrids. Cinderella 99, Apollo Eleven, Rosetta Stone, and later Princess-based lines all emerged from this relatively concentrated genetic foundation.
Princess and the Creation of Cinderella 99
The Cinderella 99 story began during a 1996 trip to Amsterdam. MrSoul found several seeds in Jack Herer flower purchased from the Sensi Smile coffeeshop. One seed produced an exceptional female he named Princess. According to his account, Princess combined a compact indoor structure with heavy resin, pronounced pineapple aroma, Haze-influenced effects, and a flowering period of roughly 50 days. She also remained stable through cloning and repeated environmental stress, making her unusually valuable as a breeding mother.
To translate Princess into seed, MrSoul crossed her with a resinous Shiva Skunk male and then repeatedly backcrossed selected male offspring to the original Princess clone. The generations were labeled P.50, P.75, P.88, and P.94 before the final Princess cross produced Cinderella 99. MrSoul called the method “cubing a clone,” with the aim of concentrating the chosen female’s characteristics while improving branch strength and yield. The name reflected the plant’s transformation from a chance seed into cannabis royalty.
What Cubing Meant as a Breeding Method
Cubing did not create a genetic clone of Princess. Seed reproduction reshuffles inherited traits, and males contribute characteristics that cannot be ignored. The method instead used repeated backcrossing to raise the proportion of ancestry connected to the target female while selecting males whose offspring most closely resembled her. Each generation required growing plants, evaluating structure and finished flowers, preserving the original mother, and choosing pollen donors capable of moving the line toward the desired expression.
That process helped make Cinderella 99 important beyond its flavor or effects. It provided growers with a documented example of how a clone-only female could become a reproducible seed family through planned multigenerational work. C99 developed a reputation for pineapple and tropical aromas, high resin, rapid flowering, and an uplifting cerebral character. It also became a widely used parent, contributing to hybrids created by Brothers Grimm and breeders outside the company.
Apollo Eleven, Rosetta Stone, and the Wider Classics
Apollo Eleven was created by crossing Genius, a productive lime-and-citrus-scented female, with a Cinderella 99 male. The resulting plants were selected for compact branching, a high calyx-to-leaf ratio, resin production, and relatively limited variation. Apollo expressed the central Brothers Grimm objective: preserve a bright, mentally active sativa-style experience while producing an indoor plant that flowered quickly and did not require the height or patience associated with traditional tropical genetics.
Rosetta Stone used a selected Jack Herer female with a P75 male from the Cinderella breeding program. It brought together sweet musk, incense, jasmine, anise, resin, and heavier production, later earning a place in High Times’ Top Ten Strains of 2018. G13 Genius combined the Airborne G13 clone with Genius, while Princess Haze returned the Princess mother to Haze-related material. Together, these releases show how MrSoul repeatedly explored a few proven females instead of replacing his genetic library with every new market trend.
Influence Through Shared Genetics
Brothers Grimm genetics spread partly because other breeders used them openly. Killer Queen, for example, was originally created by British Columbia breeder Vic High by pollinating the Airborne G13 / Hash Plant clone with a Cinderella 99 male. The cultivar later became part of the modern Brothers Grimm catalog, with its outside authorship explicitly acknowledged. This history illustrates how C99 males helped carry the company’s fast flowering, fruit, resin, and branching traits into unrelated breeding programs.
The company’s influence is therefore larger than the number of seeds sold under its own label. Cinderella 99 became a reference point for short-flowering sativa-dominant breeding, while Apollo and Rosetta Stone developed followings among growers seeking clear, energetic effects without extreme flowering times. The scarcity created by the company’s 2002 closure also encouraged reproductions and reinterpretations, making authentic provenance harder to establish but demonstrating how strongly growers valued the original families.
Closure, Preservation, and the Colorado Revival
MrSoul and Sly had agreed that they would stop operating if prohibition created unacceptable danger. In 2002, they followed that agreement, shut down the company, and separated; MrSoul later said they never worked or spoke together again. He moved to Europe and attempted to find a path for the genetics there, but Brothers Grimm remained inactive. During the hiatus, original packs became collectibles and many growers maintained or reproduced surviving lines with varying degrees of accuracy.
Legalization created an opportunity to return. In 2015, MrSoul relaunched the company in Colorado with Duke Diamond, who later departed to form Dominion Seed Company. MrSoul continued Brothers Grimm with a renewed focus on preserving classics and converting proven lines into feminized form. His wife, Laura Campanella, eventually became chief executive and co-owner, adding business development, testing, education, and collaborations to the company’s breeding-centered identity.
Feminized Seeds, Testing, and the Home Grower
Since the revival, MrSoul has concentrated heavily on feminized photoperiod breeding. The company now offers feminized versions of Cinderella 99, Apollo, Rosetta Stone, G13 Genius, Princess Haze, Killer Queen, and several newer hybrids, while maintaining a smaller regular-seed catalog. Its tester program releases developing crosses for wider evaluation, gathering information about stability and grower response before deciding which projects deserve a permanent place.
The modern business presents germination testing, flower certificates of analysis, Colorado agricultural registration, and Hop latent viroid screening as parts of seed quality control. These measures do not make every seed genetically identical, and breeder-produced performance claims still need independent confirmation. They do show how the operation has adapted from anonymous prohibition-era mail order to a more transparent agricultural model serving home growers and licensed farms.
Brothers Grimm Seeds Today
The current catalog still centers Cinderella 99, Apollo, Rosetta Stone, G13 Genius, Princess Haze, and Killer Queen, alongside newer releases such as Cinderella Pineapple, Grimm Glue, Ocifer, Rosetta 78, and other feminized testers. The company has also entered branded collaborations, including projects with Trailer Park Boys, Montel Williams, and Ice-T, while selling genetics from selected partner breeders. These releases broaden the commercial platform, but the classic Princess, Genius, Cinderella, and Rosetta families remain the clearest expression of MrSoul’s original work.
Brothers Grimm Seeds remains influential because its history connects the earliest internet breeding communities with today’s legal seed market. Cinderella 99 demonstrated how a chance female could be developed into a globally recognized seed line through systematic backcrossing. Apollo Eleven and Rosetta Stone showed that sativa character could coexist with compact structure and practical flowering. After closure, scarcity, and revival, the company’s lasting identity still rests on the same principle: carefully selected genetics should help ordinary growers produce distinctive cannabis without needing access to guarded clones.
