Royal Queen Seeds: From Dutch Seed Shop to Global Cannabis Genetics Brand

Royal Queen Seeds

Royal Queen Seeds has grown from a Netherlands-rooted seed business into one of the most visible cannabis genetics companies in the world. Known as RQS, the brand sells feminized, autoflowering, CBD-rich, regular, fast-flowering, and F1 hybrid seeds internationally. Its catalog ranges from foundational names such as Northern Light, White Widow, Critical, and Amnesia Haze to American-influenced releases including Royal Gorilla, Green Gelato, Cookies Gelato, Royal Runtz, and HulkBerry. That breadth makes RQS less like a boutique breeder built around one parental line and more like a full-scale genetics platform serving many kinds of growers.

The company’s influence also comes from accessibility. RQS paired a broad catalog with multilingual education, direct-to-consumer distribution, physical retail, germination support, and extensive cultivation content. In doing so, it helped normalize choosing seeds according to climate, space, flowering behavior, cannabinoid profile, and experience level. Its modern identity combines European seed-bank traditions with contemporary breeding, global retail, celebrity collaborations, and a highly developed online presence.

Dutch Roots and the Ramsahai Family

Royal Queen Seeds traces its roots to the Netherlands, where Amsterdam’s coffeeshops, seed companies, and grow stores created a public infrastructure for cannabis genetics. Company materials generally date the brand’s establishment to 2007, while later interviews identify Boy Ramsahai as founder and describe the recognizable family business emerging around 2009. The difference appears to reflect a transition from earlier seed activity into a formal company rather than two separate organizations. RQS eventually moved its headquarters to Catalonia, Spain, while retaining strong commercial and cultural connections to Amsterdam.

Leadership later passed to Boy’s son, Shai Ramsahai, who grew up attending cannabis conferences and observing the company’s development. As president, he has emphasized international expansion, research, consumer education, and legal home cultivation. Family continuity distinguishes RQS from labels that change ownership without maintaining a public connection to their founders. At the same time, the organization has expanded beyond a small shop, employing breeders, biologists, content specialists, retail staff, and regional business teams.

A Catalog Built for Accessibility

The early strength of Royal Queen Seeds was not one secret clone but a practical catalog of recognizable European and international genetics. Northern Light, White Widow, Critical, Special Queen 1, Shining Silver Haze, Amnesia Haze, Royal Moby, and Special Kush #1 gave growers familiar strain categories at several price points. Many were selected for manageable indoor height, predictable flowering, strong yields, and outdoor performance in suitable European climates. Special Queen 1 and Special Kush #1 became associated with affordable entry-level seeds, while Critical and Northern Light appealed to growers prioritizing speed and production.

The catalog later expanded to CBD lines, regular seeds, autoflowers, fast-flowering cultivars, and premium hybrids. RQS states that its seeds are selected from organically maintained plants and that batches are tested for viability, vigor, and germination. These are company claims, but they show how the brand positions seeds as standardized retail products supported by quality control and customer service rather than anonymous novelty items.

Royal Gorilla and the American Genetics Shift

As American cannabis began setting international trends, RQS moved into OG Kush, Cookies, Gelato, Gorilla, Runtz, and dessert-oriented genetics. Royal Gorilla became one of its signature modern cultivars. Developed as an interpretation of GG4, it combined the resin, fuel, earth, pine, and potency associated with that American family with the convenience of feminized seed. Its success helped reposition RQS from a company linked mainly to Dutch-style classics to one responding directly to California and Colorado flavor trends.

Green Gelato, Cookies Gelato, Fat Banana, Royal Cookies, Royal Runtz, Triple G, and HulkBerry expanded that transformation. These releases emphasized potency, trichome coverage, sweetness, color, and visual appeal. Some were based on famous external strain families rather than genetics invented entirely within RQS. The company’s role was to develop seed-form interpretations for an international audience. A seed version should not automatically be treated as genetically identical to a celebrated clone, even when it aims to reproduce the same general profile.

Autoflowers and Cultivation Convenience

Royal Queen Seeds became a major participant in the growth of autoflowering cannabis. Autoflowers initiate bloom according to age rather than changes in daylight, making them useful for small spaces, short outdoor seasons, discreet gardens, and rapid harvests. RQS adapted many popular photoperiod names into automatic versions, including Northern Light Auto, Royal Gorilla Auto, Green Gelato Auto, Cookies Gelato Auto, and Amnesia Haze Auto, while also creating dedicated autoflowering lines.

The category fits the broader RQS strategy. Autoflowers simplify scheduling, but they still require careful watering, adequate light, and strong early root development because their short life cycle leaves limited recovery time. By selling autos alongside beginner guides, grow reports, germination information, and equipment, RQS built an ecosystem around home cultivation rather than merely shipping seeds. Green Gelato Auto’s second-place finish in the 2026 GrowDiaries Awards and the company’s second-place result as an autoflower breeder indicate continuing support among participating growers.

The F1 Hybrid Program

The company’s most ambitious project has been its F1 hybrid program. In conventional plant breeding, a true F1 hybrid is the first generation produced by crossing two genetically uniform inbred parental lines. The goal is consistent offspring and hybrid vigor. Cannabis companies have long used “F1” more loosely for first-generation crosses whose parents remain variable. RQS says its breeders began developing inbred lines in 2016 and marketed its 2023 launch as the first commercial collection of true cannabis F1 hybrids.

Initial automatic releases included Orion F1, Titan F1, Milky Way F1, Medusa F1, Epsilon F1, and Apollo F1. RQS promotes them for uniformity, rapid development, resilience, potency, and yield. These claims should be evaluated through independent, repeated cultivation rather than accepted solely as marketing. Even so, the project is significant because it brought formal agricultural breeding language and inbred-line development into mainstream home-grow retail. Titan F1 later received RQS’s 2025 Strain of the Year designation.

Retail Expansion and a Global Brand

Royal Queen Seeds expanded beyond online sales through stores and branded retail spaces. Its history includes shops in Amsterdam and Barcelona, followed by ventures in Bangkok, New York, and Durban. In 2023, it announced its first dedicated U.S. retail presence inside The House of Cannabis in New York City. The following year, RQS used a Times Square display during a public 4/20 event with Mike Tyson, whose Tyson 2.0 brand became a genetics partner. A Durban store opened in 2025, extending the company’s physical presence into South Africa.

The exact list of active stores has changed as locations opened, closed, or shifted format, but the strategy is clear. RQS presents itself as a consumer-facing cultivation brand rather than a distant European wholesaler. Collaborations, store experiences, growing classes, educational material, and retail products create multiple points of entry for new growers. That visibility also brings debate among experienced cultivators, some of whom prefer smaller breeders with narrowly documented pedigrees. Scale improves access and distribution, but buyers still need to evaluate individual lines.

Awards, Education, and Lasting Influence

Royal Queen Seeds has received company and cultivar awards. It won Best Seed Bank honors at Spannabis, the International Cannabis Awards, and the EMJAYS around 2023–2024. At the GrowDiaries Awards 2026, RQS placed first for Best Cannabis Breeder, while Royal Gorilla won Best Strain. The company says more than 40 of its cultivars have received awards. Such honors indicate visibility and community support, although judging methods and promotional influence differ among events.

Education is equally important to the brand’s growth. Its website covers germination, nutrition, pests, soil biology, harvesting, cannabinoids, terpenes, extraction, and strain selection. The company also publishes an editorial process and identifies the subject areas covered by its writers and contributors. As with any breeder-funded resource, product claims deserve critical reading, but the library has lowered the barrier to cultivation for a large international audience.

By 2026, Royal Queen Seeds operates from its Spanish base while emphasizing its Dutch roots. Its legacy is not the preservation of one legendary underground line, but the globalization of the seed-bank model. The company made cannabis seeds easier to compare, purchase, research, and grow while adapting from Dutch classics to American dessert hybrids, autoflowers, CBD cultivars, and formal F1 breeding. That broad approach will not satisfy every collector seeking rare provenance, but it explains why RQS became one of the most recognized names in cannabis genetics.
